What is a Word Wall?

I used this set to create an interactive word wall for my firsties to use while they are reading and writing. A word wall is a place in your classroom dedicated to displaying high-frequency words. My students use it daily to find just the right word when they’re reading or writing.

This set of cards is perfect for your first-grade word wall! With all 92 words included, you will be all set to print and go. Consider printing on card stock and laminating for durability.

How to Use a Word Wall in Fundations?

A great word wall is used regularly by students and become part of your daily instruction To make a word wall:

Choose a place in your classroom that is visible and accessible to students. Many of my students get up from their seats to get a closer look at our word wall.
Organize high-frequency words by letter. This makes it easier for students to locate the word they are looking for and supports an understanding of the alphabetic principle.
Add your Fundations trick words with each unit. I have numbered each card with each unit to help you stay organized.
Model using the word wall to find and spell words during writing.

Teach children how to use the word wall. Model how to use the word wall to find and spell words during writing or how to “read around the room” using a pointer or their finger to read the words on the wall. Each time a student asks about a word that is on the word wall remind them to use their word wall. Eventually, you will find that studentes are using the word wall on their own- without reminders!
